Common Leather Upholstery Issues

  • My leather furniture needs to be recovered
  • My leather is too worn and needs to be replaced
  • My leather is ripped and torn and needs to be recovered

Did you know? Upholstering in leather has a fascinating benefit. Leather is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Here's why: Leather is porous like our skin. When leather was a hide, it protected the animal from the harsh elements. When the weather was hot, it opened up allowing more air to flow through so the animal was cooler. In the winter the hide constricted, retaining more warmth. Imitation leather or vinyl does not breathe and is cold in winter and sweaty in the summer.

Leather Material

Choose from a wide range of leather grades, textures, finishes, and colors. Adding value to your leather furniture requires upholstering in the finest materials. We carry top grain leather hides excellent for high-end upholstery use. We select tanneries in Italy for their sophisticated tanning process and artisan finishing treatments.

There are three major types of leather upholstery: Aniline, Semi Aniline, and Protected or Pigmented Leather. Because each feature benefits and limitations, we must consider a few factors when choosing the right leather for your furniture. Evaluate your home life and home décor. First, we must consider the needs of your home such as the level of daily use, size of family, and pets. Second, we must consider the look and feel of the leather.

Aniline Leather

Aniline leather is the most exclusive and natural choice. Aniline tanning dyes through the hide leaving a rich transparent color and minor surface characteristics such as brands, insect bites, scars, pores, and other marks. The supple texture adds a warm and soft feel. The absorbent and unprotected nature makes it prone to sun damage, color fading, and water spotting, stains and spills. Special leather care and maintenance is required.

Semi-Aniline Leather

Semi-Aniline is the most practical choice for its durability and designer appeal. Semi-Aniline leather is aniline tanned and finished with a light pigmented coating. The surface treatment provides added protection against direct sunlight and stains and spotting. The touch feels smooth and soft. Keep your leather cleaning easy with this semi-treated leather.

Protected Leather

Protected leather is the most durable choice. Protected leather is aniline tanned and finished with a penetrating surface coating. The pigmented surface adds strength and hold up against normal to heavy wear. Depend on the durability for many years to come. Great for easy upholstery cleaning and maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the best type of leather?

Often the most luxurious leather is not the most suitable for everyday family use. Aniline leather is categorized as the most expansive, specifically for its natural look and soft feel. If durability and easy maintenance is the priority, protected or pigmented leathers are a better choice. With proper care and cleaning, all genuine leathers should last for many years.

Q. Is imported leather the better quality

We carry Italian leather upholstery for a reason. Leather finished in Italy have sophisticated tanning processes and artisan finishing (polishing, wax and oil treatments, unique texture effects).

Some imported leather is manufactured to internationally recognized standards. Domestic American leather tanneries comply with the same standards. We carry European and American manufactured leather hides.

Q. What is the most durable leather for children?

Most customers look for a combination of durability and easy cleaning in their leather furniture. Protected leather are well suited for this purpose. Most liquid spills can be spot cleaned and wiped off.
